Founded in 1920, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a world-renowned university with a hundred years of history. HIT was among the first batch of universities that were selected into 211 Project and 985 Project and is listed as Class A university in the Double First-Class University Plan of China in 2017. HIT boasts 38 academicians and 9 national first-class disciplines. The university has 10 disciplines ranking top 5 in China; HIT ranks second in terms of key disciplines in science and engineering; its engineering ranks 6 globally.
Harbin Institute of Technology, Weihai (HITWH) was established in 1985 with the approval of then Ministry of Aerospace Industry. In 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, People’s Government of Shandong province as well as People’s Government of Weihai city signed a joint agreement on the construction of HITWH. In 2014, the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology signed a joint agreement on the construction of disciplines of marine science and naval architecture and ocean engineering, marking the beginning of a new phase of the development of HITWH.
HITWH is located at Weihai, Shandong province, covering an area of over 1860 mu. The architectures display a combination of European architecture style and modern architecture style. A mixture of traditional and modern cultures as well as western and Chinese cultures symbolizes the inheritance and innovation of HITWH.
HITWH has more than 11,000 full-time undergraduate, master and doctoral students. There are 11 departments (departments) and 2 teaching departments, 37 undergraduate programs, and 18 doctoral programs and 30 master programs that HITWH shares with the headquarter of the university. HITWH owns three master programs, namely Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Marine Science and Automobile Engineering independently. HITWH also boasts other disciplines that are chosen as key provincial disciples or ranked top 1% globally in ESI.
HITWH has diverse faculty members with expertise and research abilities. It has a team of nationally famous lecturers and professors, and employs 93 high-level professionals including foreign deans and professors as visiting professors. Besides, 10 academicians established their laboratories and research teams in HITWH.
HITWH adheres to the school motto of keeping strict standard for qualification, making every endeavor to perfect. In order to meet the national strategy of building a strong marine power and meet the national demand for boosting economy, HITWH has proposed a development strategy featuring one “blue (blue ocean)”, two “smart (smart manufacturing and smart city)”, three “focus (naval architecture, marine science and automobile engineering)” and three “new advantages (new material, new information and new energy)” and has built research teams with excellent researching abilities.
HITWH has over 30 key laboratories and research centers, including the first comprehensive marine test area, the national key laboratory of advanced welding and connection, the key laboratory of marine monitoring and information processing, a new generation of comprehensive experimental platform for land-to-sea, sky-to-sea and sea-to-sea observation technology (under construction) and International Joint Research Center for Marine Engineering Materials and Deep Processing Technology.
During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, HITWH has undertaken 217 national-level scientific research projects, and the annual research funding exceeds 100 million yuan; 1,170 scientific research achievements have been obtained, including one second-class National Technology Invention Awards, two first-class National Science &Technology Progress Awards, one second-class National Science &Technology Progress Awards and 24 provincial and ministerial awards. In the past five years, HITWH has undertaken 563 cooperation projects with enterprises, universities, research institutions in Shandong Province, and won the Technology Golden Bridge Award of Technology Market in Shandong Province in 2015.
HITWH has taken student cultivation as its ultimate goal. HITWH is student-centered and is driven by the development of students. Focusing on core-value-shaping and comprehensive ability cultivation, HITWH has developed a student cultivation system that combines general education and professional education, classroom teaching and internship practices, traditional education methods and modern education methods, domestic education and international education. HITWH students have won numerous awards in various domestic and international science and technology competitions and have built more than 100 innovative teams, represented by “HRT Team”, “3D Printer” and “Red Scarf”.
